Male Suicide

What is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45. Men are facing a crisis, how many men do you think commit suicide each day in the UK? The answer is 12 that is one man every two hours. 76% of all suicides are male and this silent killer is claiming the lives of more men under the age of 45 than anything else. Now ask yourself why that is. Suicide is never talked about it is swept under the carpet as a dirty secret. It is shrouded in shame and stigma. Talking about suicide does not plant the idea in someone’s head. We must accept the fact that suicidal thoughts are something that happens. And we should start to talk openly about it. There is nothing wrong with men feeling suicidal the thing is we need to talk openly about it and change the expectations put on men and young boys that leads them to have those thoughts. What does it mean to be masculine? What does it mean to be a man? Society tells us that men should be strong and dependable, when men cannot meet these expectations, they feel like they are doing something wrong. How many times have you heard yourself saying “they just need to man up” this is a stereotypical phrase, and it needs to stop. Conversations are starting to change encouraging men to be more open and vulnerable. It is ok to talk about your feelings and anxieties, its ok to breakdown and cry. Its ok to say you need help and support. We need to reconsider how we put expectations on the men in our lives and in society. We must ask our husbands, boyfriends, sons, friends, and colleagues how they are and is there anything bothering them. Listen without judging and responding let them know they do not have to do this alone……… Cheryl Murray Coaching and Counselling is here to help just click the link below
